PNRA, in conjunction with USRowing and a grant from the United States Olympic Committee, founded the Rowing Is Growing (R.I.G.) program in 2008 to bring the sport of rowing to a new demographic. With the support of the Trenton Central High School, the Greater Trenton YMCA and Boys and Girls Club of the Greater Trenton Area the program R.I.G. has reached close to 250 minority kids in the Trenton metropolitan area in its first six months.

During 7 weekend introductory sessions, 30 kids took part in rowing at the Caspersen Rowing Center as well as the Princeton University indoor rowing tanks. The program is providing new opportunities are being to a demographic that is largely missing from the rowing community nationally, and would not have had such opportunities without the RIG program. The R.I.G. program is just beginning and has a great deal of room to grow.

We have commitments from the community organizations and high schools in Trenton to help continue the program into the spring and summer. Our goal is to get student-athletes actively involved in the Mercer Junior Rowing program. Youth interested in getting involved should contact David Banks at: If you want to get involved in this important outreach work, either as a volunteer or contribute financially, please see the Support PNRA section of this website.
