Mercer Parents/Athletes,

Our first summer regatta begins this Friday! Below should be all the information you need to know for the Independence Day Regatta!

TRAILER LOADING: As this is an away regatta the athletes will be loading the trailer Thursday after practice. Please be aware that trailer loading can take some time and although we try to get off the water a tad early your child may be a little later than normal for pick up!

LOCATION: The regatta will be held in Philadelphia on the famous Schuylkill River! For information on directions please click here. The address to use for GPS is: 2200 Kelly Drive, Philadelphia PA, 19129 (Address is the St. Joe’s (Gillin) Boathouse).

DROP OFF: All athletes should arrive 2 hours before their scheduled race time. Please drop your athlete off at the Mercer boat trailer, which will be parked in the lot adjacent to the St. Joseph University (Gillin) boathouse. Once an athlete arrives at the trailer on race day we require their undivided attention and focus. Parent presence around the trailer causes distraction for both coaches and athletes. We ask that all parents remain at the big blue Mercer tent toward the finish line farther down the course. After your athlete’s race is over and they have been dismissed by their coach they are allowed to be picked up.

PARKING: Be aware that parking is extremely limited and that the section of Kelly Drive along the racecourse (from above the boathouse to beyond the grandstand) will be closed to traffic during the regatta. IN ORDER TO PARK AT THE COURSE, YOU MUST PRINT THIS PARKING PASS AND DISPLAY IT IN YOUR WINDSHIELD.

UNIFORM: All athletes are asked to arrive wearing the Mercer unisuit and Mercer hat.

WEATHER: Friday and Saturday are scheduled to be very hot. Please make sure athletes come prepared with sunscreen, water, hat, and sunglasses.

SCHEDULE: Below is the schedule for the Mercer boats. Here is the entire schedule for this weekend’s racing. As the schedule might change please keep checking back.

FOOD DONATIONS: The parent coordinators have asked athletes to donate the following items for the regatta to be dropped off at the trailer with your athlete.

If your LAST NAME begins with A-M, please send a case of water or Gatorade to share with the team.
If your LAST NAME begins with N-Z, please send a box of Clif bars or a few servings of fruit (bag of apples, bunch of bananas) to share with the team.

PLEASE NOTE: Because the athletes have varying race schedules and times that they need to be at the course, they should each bring whatever food (including lunch) they would like for the day.

Mercer Novice Update: Week 8!

Mercer Novice Parents/Athletes,

The season is coming to an end! Coach Zach and I are so proud of the hard work all our athletes have put in the past two months. With that being said, the novices still have one more race this Saturday!!!

SATURDAY RACE INFORMATION: This Saturday the novices will be racing in the MAPL Regatta. This is a 1500m race against the Mid Atlantic Prep schools.

  • Who is racing?: Due to the amount of boats entered in the Boy’s Novice event only our top 2 boy’s novices eights will be racing. All four novice girl’s eights will be racing. (Weather depending). Novice Girl’s lineups can be found at the end of the email (Please keep reading!!).
  • When should athletes arrive?: As of right now the start time for races is 4pm. We ask that our athletes arrive at the boathouse at 2pm.
  • Where should families watch?: As the race will be 1500 meters the best vantage point would be the Blue Gazebo on the other side of the lake. I would like a strong crowd over there to show support for our novice crews.
  • What should athletes wear?: Athletes should have the racing uni on with layers on top as it will be windy.
  • Weather Information: High winds are predicted for Saturday afternoon. As safety is our biggest concern, there is a potential that boats may not race on Saturday due to the high winds.

MONDAY PRACTICE: Monday is Novice Boathouse Clean Up Day! Practice will take place from 4 – 6pm. This is a mandatory practice for all novice rowers.

BANQUET: Mercer will be holding a team banquet on May 24th at 6pm. This is open to both athletes and their families! It is a great event to celebrate the end of the season. More information to come!

HOMEFRONT DONATIONS: Boy’s Novice Head Coach and Outreach Coordinator, Zach Spitzer, is collecting personal care items to donate to Homefront. He is asking that all families contribute one item for donation. Donations can be dropped off to the PNRA Office.

IRAs & YOUTH NATIONALS: Please keep the weekends of 6/3 – 6/5 and 6/9 – 6/12 open as PNRA/Mercer will be hosting both the IRAs (Collegiate Championships for Heavyweight Men and Lightweight Men and Women) as well as Youth Nationals! This is going to take a serious volunteer effort from our team and I want to remind you to keep an eye out for volunteer information!

Finally, I would like to thank all parents and athletes for an amazingly fun and successful season! It has truly been such a pleasure working with the novice athletes. I hope they have enjoyed the season just as much as I have.

I look forward to seeing you all at our last regatta of the season and at the Banquet!

Please let me know if you have any questions!

Mercer Novice: Regionals Information!

Mercer Novice Parents/Athletes,

Regionals is tomorrow!!! Here at Mercer we are all very excited for this weekend. Below is (hopefully) all the information you need to know. Please make sure to look closely at the time the athletes are expected to arrive at the boathouse based on what boat they are in. As our races are in the late afternoon on Saturday, please try to have a relaxing morning with not a lot of activity!

NOVICE GIRLS: Please remember we have a team bonding event with the varsity girls after practice today at the boathouse. It should run no later than 7PM.

DROP OFF: When you drop your athlete off please drop them off and leave the boathouse. Once an athlete arrives at the boathouse on race day I require their undivided focus. Parents hanging around the boathouse causes distractions for both coaches and athletes. We ask that all parents drive over to the other side of the lake and view the regatta with all other spectators (This is also the best vantage point for watching the races). After your athlete’s race is over and they have been dismissed by their coach they are allowed to be picked up.

UNIFORM: All athletes are asked to arrive wearing the Mercer unisuit. As it will be cold, I would recommend athletes coming in layers which they can take off before racing.

VOLUNTEERING: We still need many volunteers for Saturday and Sunday!! Please remember that as this is a home regatta and we ask all families to contribute 4 hours of volunteering. Please click here to sign up to volunteer.

SUNDAY RACES: Boats must place top 4 in their heat on Saturday to race in the semis Sunday morning. To advance to the final boats must place top 3 in their semi. Below are the approximate of arrival and racing for those events. Those racing Sunday morning that advance to the final will stay at the boathouse in between their races. This is mandatory. Those racing on Sunday morning please come with a packed lunch to eat in between races (hopefully we qualify from the semis to finals!!).

WEATHER: Sunday is scheduled to be quite windy. As this is a qualifying event for varsity crews to advance to Youth Nationals, the schedule may change on Sunday to accommodate getting those events in. Please be aware that the schedule might change due to the weather conditions.

SCHEDULE: Below is the schedule for our boats. Here is the schedule for this weekend’s racing. As it might change please keep checking back.

Mercer Novice Update: Week 6!

Mercer Novice Parents/Athletes,

The season is quickly coming to an end! Coach Zach and I are so excited by all the improvements our athletes have made in the past few weeks!

We have to big races ahead – Regionals (next weekend) and MAPL (Saturday May 14th). Next weekend is the US Rowing Mid Atlantic Regionals. The event is held on both Saturday and Sunday. With 19 entries in the Girls’s Youth Novice 8+ event and 16 in the Boy’s Novice 8+ the athletes will have a chance to progress through heats, semis and finals. A progression entails that during the course of the heats and semis boats will advance to the next round or be eliminated depending on how they place in their race.

An official schedule has not been released. However, it is expected that all novice eights will race the heats in the afternoon on Saturday, semis on Sunday morning, and finals late Sunday afternoon.

PNRA is still in need of for volunteers for next weekend. We ask all families contribute four volunteer hours for this regatta! Please sign up here.

Once I have the schedule and lane draws I will send out an email detailing all regatta information.

Below is a list of novice girls expected to race next weekend. Coach Zach will be sending his racing roster out by Sunday. It is expected that all athletes racing are at practice everyday the week leading up to a race.

PNRA/Mercer Pairing Up With Homefront!

Mercer Parents/Athletes,

We have recently begun working with a local organization called Homefront! This organization helps families that have come on hard times by giving them a place to live, and food to eat, while they complete their education and get back on their feet. We have a volunteering opportunity coming up for our athletes on May 28th!

The volunteering sign up sheet will be given to the Varsity Boys first, and any remaining spots will be given to the Varsity girls that would like to participate. If there are remaining spots on the volunteer sign up, it will be opened up to the Novice programs. We are looking for 10 – 15 participants.

If you do not get a chance to volunteer in May, DON’T WORRY, we will have volunteering opportunities the last weekend of every month. We will also have volunteering opportunities with the Special Olympics in July! More information on that to come.

In the meantime, we will have boxes in the office to donate to Homefront. At the end of each month we will bring our donation to their facility when we go volunteer.

What we are asking for this month are personal care items (A list of preferred items is featured below)!

If you have any questions please feel free to email our Outreach Coordinator, Zach Spitzer.

Thank you!

It was an awesome weekend of racing for Mercer! Our novices did very well – Boy’s 1st Novice – 4th, Boy’s 2nd Novice – 2nd, Boy’s 3rd Novice – 3rd, Girls 1st Novice – 4th, Girl’s 2nd Novice – 2nd, Girls 3rd Novices – 1st! With just three weeks until Mid Atlantic Regionals things are heating up at the boathouse! All novices will be taking a 2k test today – it is very important that all athletes be here as this 2k will be taken largely into account for future boatings!

Both novice teams are looking to potentially have a Sunday practice this coming weekend! Please make sure to keep your schedules open. I will have more details this Friday in terms of timing.

Mercer Lake Sprints Information for Mercer Novice Team!

Mercer Novice Parents/Athletes,

Mercer Sprints will be held this weekend. We will be racing early Saturday morning. Below is the schedule for the weekend. Please make sure to look closely at the time the athletes are expected to arrive at the boathouse based on what boat they are in.

** MERCER TEAM PICTURES WILL BE TAKEN TOMORROW AT PRACTICE – EVERYONE MUST WEAR THEIR WHITE RACING SHIRT.

If your athlete does not have a white racing shirt I will give one them one at practice tomorrow!

A few items to be aware of for Mercer Sprints:

 – When you drop your athlete off please drop them off and leave the boathouse.

 – All athletes are asked to arrive wearing the white Mercer racing shirt and black spandex. All athletes should have a white racing shirt as they will all need one for team pictures this Wednesday. Please make sure athletes come wearing layers as it will be chilly in the morning but should warm up as the day progresses.

 – We still need stakeboat holders for Saturday afternoon and Sunday. I am asking that our novice program fill those spots as our athletes are not racing during those times. It is always a great experience for athletes new to the sport.  Please click here to sign up to volunteer.

Mercer Novice Update: Week 3

Mercer Novice Parents/Athletes,

It has been a windy week here at Mercer, luckily we were able to get some boats out on the water! Here are the weekly team updates:

FORMS: Many of you have been so helpful turning in missing forms. Please continue to turn them in or email me with questions. I have been given a lot of forms this week so if your name is on the list and you have just recently turned in the forms – please do not hesitate to remind me! Below is the list of forms I am still missing:
Screen Shot 2016-04-08 at 10.47.22 AM

PARKING/PICK UP & DROP OFF: A lot of parents have been using the upper parking lot (The one closest to the boathouse). We ask that lot be reserved for coaches only. Please do not park in the upper lot closest to the boathouse while waiting for children to finish practice. When dropping off and picking up please pull into a spot further away from the boathouse and have the athletes walk to and from the boathouse. Using the upper lot causes a lot of traffic and boats are constantly being brought around back behind the boathouse. That area needs to be clear to make boat moving feasible.

MERCER LAKE SPRINTS: The novice athletes will be participating in their first regatta Saturday April 16!! All athletes are asked to race in our white Mercer racing shirt and black spandex. If your athlete does not have a Mercer racing shirt they will be given one at the boathouse on race day. I will be sending out another email specifically talking about Mercer Sprints logistics as soon as I receive the lane draws for each boat.  It is imperative that all athletes in a racing line up be here everyday next week. The week leading up to races are extremely important and missing one person from a boat is detrimental to the whole team. Below are my tentative line ups for Mercer Lake Sprints, Coach Zach is still finalizing his. With that being said, we still need volunteers for Mercer Lake Sprints. I encourage both parents and athletes to volunteer on Sunday or in the afternoon on Saturday as we are not racing during those times. Click here to sign up for volunteering.

Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions!

I am looking forward to a great practice today!

Mercer Novice Team Updates: Week 2!

Mercer Novice Parents/Athletes,

It has been another great week at the boathouse! Unfortunately for safety reasons, we were only able to get on the water this week due to extremely windy conditions, hopefully next week we will be more lucky with the weather. Below are just a few reminders as we continue to progress through the season!

Next week the forecast calls for chilly weather, please make sure athletes dress in layers.

Mercer Lake Sprints is fast approaching and each novice team is scheduled to have 3 boats racing! As we have only been out on the water once, it is still hard to tell who will be racing April 16th.

We are still looking for volunteers for the Mercer Lake Sprints regatta and you can sign up here! As novice racing takes place approximately between 8 – 12 on Saturday morning I highly encourage all parents and athletes to sign up for Saturday afternoon or anytime on Sunday!

I would also like to thank everyone for being so helpful with turning in missing forms. I apologize for any inconvenience it has been to bring in health forms etc. I have searched high and low for many of the forms and I still am unable to locate a number of them. With that being said, below is the updated list of forms I am still missing.

Many athletes have been great at communicating with both Coach Zach and I about absences and filling out the absence form. We ask that as absences come up in that future that all athletes continue to fill out the online form available here. I would also like to remind all of you that we do take absences into account for boating. I know many families plan spring breaks months in advance but moving forward we hope the amount of absences will decrease significantly as it is hard to put line ups together when there are so many absences. Rowing is a commitment and we ask that all parents and athletes understand that.

Novice Athletes Missing Forms

Mercer Novice Parents and Athletes,

After looking over the forms in our database as well as the forms that have been handed to me recently, I have complied a list of missing forms.
As we ask that swim tests are only performed once, I understand some may be in our summer camp files. However, I do not know the years as to when the athletes attended the camps. If an athlete is missing a swim test and turned on in for a novice summer camp please inform me of the year they attended. Below is the list of missing forms I have. I apologize for any convenience it might be to track down forms that have already been turned in, I am doing my best to collect all the necessary ones. Additionally, if an athletes is missing forms some are easy to reprint and are available here. Please try to turn these forms in ASAP!

Novice Updates!

Mercer Novice Parents and Athletes,

Here are some updates for this week and the upcoming week of practice.

We will be having our first 2,000 meter test today on the erg! For those who are unable to make practice today you must make up the 2k before being allowed to go on the water (We plan to go on the water starting next Monday weather permitting)! Athletes may arrive early for Monday’s practice (3:30 no later) to make up the test and be able to go on the water that day. I ask that all athletes planning to make up the test on Monday before practice email me.

As there are a lot of spring breaks this upcoming week it is very important for all athletes to fill out the absence form online for each day they are absent. To fill out the absence form click here.

There are a few athletes who are not registered. To register for the spring season click here. Please also remember that all athletes who did not participate in the Fall season are required to fill out all the forms and turn them in to me. All forms can be found here.

The gear store closes on March 28 so please make sure to order your unisuit before then as having a team unisuit is required to race for 2 of our regattas. To order click here.

Mercer Sprints is fast approaching and we still need volunteers! As novices only race Saturday morning I encourage all novices to sign up for stakeboating on Sunday! All are more than welcome to volunteer. To sign up click here

Please let me know if you have any questions!
